Tina Cobelle-Sturges is a multifaceted artist, who is equally adept at abstract and representational modes of expression. She utilizes a vibrant palette to express to reflect the joy she experiences in the world around her. Working in oil, acrylic and watercolor, her paintings can be categorized into three themes: pure abstractions, semi-abstract landscapes, and scenes of New York City.

Sturges’ grew up in Ridgefield, Connecticut with her father, internationally known and prolific artist Charles Cobelle. “I watched my father constantly creating; he was my greatest teacher. Art has always been around me and within me.” The influence of Cobelle, who is regarded as one of the last links to the Open Line School of Paris and who studied with Chagall and Dufy, is noticeably evident in her work.

There is no doubt as to appeal of her work. Sturges has completed numerous murals and other commissioned works for private collectors, and is a contract artist with American Artists Group. Her work has been featured in solo and group shows throughout the region, and is currently represented by The Geary Gallery in Darien, CT. While she is well-known in Connecticut, Sturges’s work is in private collections worldwide. (And interest continues to grow! At a fundraiser in 2021, an abstract painting from her new series sold for a record-breaking amount. At the same fundraiser the following year, the final bid for another abstract painting commanded nearly double the prior year’s amount!)

Her contributions to local arts initiatives have been recognized by institutions including the Ridgefield Arts Council in 2023, and by the ROTA in 2022. Sturges serves on the Board of Directors of the Ridgefield Guild of Artists. Her vibrant painting of Ridgefield’s Main Street was featured on the cover of the book, Ridgefield Enters the 21st Century, and are sold as limited-edition prints. For The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, Sturges painted The Porches of Ridgefield, a tribute to town’s historic past (which is available for purchase through the Aldrich Editions program at The Museum). Sturges also created a Vietnam War Memorial for the Town of Ridgefield, which is currently on display in Town Hall.
